The King of Cups is one of four Court cards. The Cups suit is connected with the element of Water. This suit is also related to Spring, the colour blue, and to the direction West. Cups are also associated with emotion, and as such are strongly linked to love, romanticism, intuition, spirituality and sensitivity.

In decks of ordinary playing cards the lowest value card is usually the Ace and the highest value card is the King. Here each successively higher card is worth more than the lower numbered cards. Similarly the suits are often given a ranking into relatively higher value too, such as in the game of Bridge or Five Hundred. In Tarot there is no such value system. We employ the same principle of sequencing but rather than each card being more valuable than the previous one, it instead represents another step in the progress along a given path. The Aces represent the beginning, and the tens and Kings represent the conclusion of cycles. As a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, and as the journey is as important as the arriving, so the cards reflect the value of the path we take, as much as the getting there.
